Binary Black Holes at the Core of Galaxy Clusters

چکیده
In this paper we push forward and exploit an analogy between the morphologies of the X-ray cavities observed in some galaxy clusters, and the optically deficient pointsymmetric bubbles occurring in some planetary nebulae (PNe). Point-symmetric PNe are thought to be shaped by stellar binary interactions; namely, the presence of a companion to the PN’s progenitor star is required. We suggest that similar pointsymmetric structures in the X-ray cavities of galaxy clusters might be associated with the presence of massive binary black holes. A systematic cataloguing of highresolution images of the diffuse X-ray emission at the core of galaxy clusters might contribute to individuate massive binary black holes.

The mathematical simplicity of black holes, combined with their links to some of the most energetic events in the universe, means that black holes are key objects for fundamental physics and astrophysics. Until recently, it was generally believed that black holes in nature appear in two broad mass ranges: stellar-mass (M ∼ 3 − 20M⊙), which are produced by the core collapse of massive stars, and...

متن کاملFour-body Effects in Globular Cluster Black Hole Coalescence
In the high density cores of globular clusters, multibody interactions are expected to be common, with the result that black holes in binaries are hardened by interactions. It was shown by Sigurdsson & Hernquist (1993) and others that 10M black holes interacting exclusively by three-body encounters do not merge in the clusters themselves, because recoil kicks the binaries out of the clusters be...
متن کاملEvolution of Nuclear Star Clusters
Two-body relaxation times of nuclear star clusters are short enough that gravitational encounters should substantially affect their structure in 10 Gyr or less. In nuclear star clusters without massive black holes, dynamical evolution is a competition between core collapse, which causes densities to increase, and heat input from the surrounding galaxy, which causes densities to decrease. The ma...
متن کاملSingle and Binary Black Holes and Their Influence on Nuclear Structure
Massive central objects affect both the structure and evolution of galactic nuclei. Adiabatic growth of black holes generates power-law central density profiles with slopes in the range 1.5 <∼ −d log ρ/d log r <∼ 2.5, in good agreement with the profiles observed in the nuclei of galaxies fainter than MV ≈ −20. However the shallow nuclear profiles of bright galaxies require a different explanati...
